Matt Cruden was one of the early pioneers to search and surf the many archipelago’s along the west coast off Sumatra in the early 1990’s.
Captaining the Surf Travel Company’s first surf charter vessel in the Mentawai Islands in 1994, there was literally only 3 boats along the entire coast going surfing in that year.

Throughout the past 13 or 14 years we’ve seen many changes, developments, boat wars, more boats and more boats. It’s no wonder, as we have some of the best cruising grounds, anchorages, coral reefs and variety of waves in the world. Almost every surfing video in the past decade features these waves along the Archipelago’s off Western Sumatra.

The “Sumatran Surf Voyages” has ground handling and logistics managers in Jakarta, Padang, Medan and Guning Sitoli who all work together to make sure the traveling through Indo part of your journey is as smooth as possible, organising any overnight accommodation, surfboard, luggage handling, storage and transfers where necessary.
